Kaka Point beach walk
My Mum is a surrogate for friends in Balclutha, we are spending some of our isolation time down here for her to have the baby. We're staying at a crib at Kaka Point right beside the beach. One day we went for a walk down the beach, we picked up some cool shells and played in the waves. We were walking down the beach and Mum saw something moving, Mum and Dad told us to come back to them because Dad said what Mum saw was a seal or a sea lion we had to turn around because if you get between them and the sea they could get frightened and chase you. Luke and Mum left and Dad and I stayed there, he did some whistling and got it to sit up for some photos what do you think it was a seal or a sea lion?

When I first saw the title to your post Cody I was wondering where Kaka Point Beach was but you answered my question. What an amazing mum you have Cody and it is lovely that you are all spending some time together and also getting to see, what is it?? my guess is a big fat sealion.Am I right? Why is it called Kaka point? Is it named after another NZ animal?

I am not sure what it is named after but we think it was a sea lion to
DeleteHi Cody
ReplyDeleteIt is a really lovely thing that your mum is doing for her friend and it's a really special time that your mum, dad, Luke and you get to share together. Gosh, that sealion (because he looks big!) actually looks like a driftwood tree stump. It was lucky that you saw movement before you actually were between the sealion and the sea. Is it cooler at Kaka Point, than it is in Hokitika?
it is a bit cooler but that might just be because it is my first time at kaka point

ReplyDeleteWow, you are quite lucky, because you get to spend some of Lockdown in a place that is new to you, so you get to do lots of exploring, it is almost like having a holdiay. I think it may be a New Zealand (Hooker) sealion or an elephant seal that you have seen, You should also keep your eye out for any yellow eyes penguins or their tracks.
Your Mum is a pretty specail lady to be giving such an amzazing gift to her friends. You must be pretty proud of her.
we have been looking we did see some dolphins but no penguins yet
DeleteI am really impressed with your photography skills Cody. You have a real eye for taking photos on the right angle and with great lighting conditions. I have never been to Kaka Point Beach or even heard of it so thanks for teaching me something new. When we are allowed to travel around again I will have to put it on my 'have to go to' list of places.
ReplyDeleteBalclutha is a quite a long way from Hokitika isn't it? It is a very special time for your whole family to be together while your mum does this wonderful thing for her friend. I wonder what photos you will post next?
Mrs Phelps
dad helped me with the photos and balclutha is about 8 hours away from hokitika
DeleteHi Cody, great photography, were you allowed to use Dad's camera? or have got your own? I especially like the POV (point of view) in the tree one...great leading lines as it dfaws your eye right from the bottom, along the tree and up to the sky. Did you startle the sea lion? That happened to me once and it started to chase me, although I think it got the biggest fright and just wanted to get back to the water. Enjoy your special time down south with your family. I hope to see some more amazing photos soon
ReplyDeletedad whistled at it and got it to sit up
DeleteSo you could take the photo? I think it might be a fat seal. Tell mum she is amazing doing that and you and Dad and Luke can be very proud of her.
DeleteI think it was a Sea Lion Cody, but I wasn't sticking around to find out!
